What is infinity? Is it a number or just another mathematical definition to fit our purpose? But then what are numbers? It is pointless asking such questions. The answers are some philosophical thoughts. Then how do we deal with them whenever they arise?

Amidst the humongous number of heavenly entities existing in the universe, planet Earth deserves special mention and interest as it is the only entity that harbours and sustains life. The hardcore exponents of astrobiology might frown upon my statement and shrug me off as a cynic; but nevertheless, they too would nod their heads in agreement that with the scientific evidence available at hand, it is only a reasonable and fair asseveration. In course of its history from being a piece of inhospitable mass to a breeding ground of millions of species, the blue planet has seen a gamut of organisms with different shapes and sizes in varied numbers and habitats. There has been a gradual trail of evolution that has time and again seen numerous animals coming to the fore while others were obliterated from the face of the earth. Naturalists have witnessed large animals like the dinosaurs being wiped out completely while they have also been curious onlookers to the survival strategies of various smaller organisms. Having understood the diverse facets of evolution, evolutionists across different lines of thought agree that survival of an individual species has always been inextricably linked with the flexibility in the adaptive capacities of the species.

What is Informatics olympiad?

The Informatics Olympiads are competitive programming contests for secondary school students. They require basic skills in algorithms and data structures. In India we have the Indian Computing Olympiads which leads to the International Informatics Olympiad(IOI). The Indian Computing Olympiads are managed by IARCS (Indian Association for Research in Computing Science). The first International Informatics Olympiad was held in 1989 in Pravetz, Bulgaria. It is one of the major science Olympiads besides Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Astronomy. India started participating in the year 2002. Recently, Akshat Bubna got the first ever gold medal for India in 2014 (and also won the Go For Gold challenge by Codechef). IOI 2015 will be conducted in Kazakhastan.

Midway into the year gone by, the zoologists and taxonomists “announced” to the world the discovery or rather “confirmed” the existence of yet another mammalian species in the planet Earth- Olinguito. This mammal from the raccoon family had until then, evaded the ever prying and curious eyes of the wildlife experts and explorers. However, the late introduction of this mammal into the annals of zoological literature is attributed to a “case of mistaken identity”. As pointed out by Kristofer Helgen, curator of mammals at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, USA: "It (olinguito) was in museums, it's been in zoos, and its DNA had even been sequenced, but no one had connected the pieces and looked close enough to realize, basically, the significance of this remarkable and this beautiful animal," Awed by this piece of news in all major bulletins, question that arises now is how many more species of animals are yet to be discovered by the humans?
