29 Dec Chemistry Section is the most scoring- Experts Advice on Clearing NEET 2018
Experts suggest that Chemistry is the most scoring subject, not only for NEET, but also for other entrance examinations such as AIIMS, given that candidates prepare for it the right way.
NEET 2018 is scheduled to be conducted on May 10, 2018 for admission into various medical and dental courses in government and private medical institutions across the country. With only a few months left for the exam, it’s necessary that students prepare for it in the right sequence.
To ensure the same, we have shared a few tips to prepare for the Chemistry section of National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET).
Chemistry Section of NEET 2018
The Chemistry section in NEET 2018 will contain 45 questions. Four marks will be awarded for every correct attempt, while one mark will be deducted for every incorrect attempt.
The subject is further divided into three sections – Physical, Organic and Inorganic. The weightage of these three sections is 36%, 28% and 36% respectively. Mostly, 14 questions are asked from each section but CBSE may change the weightage for NEET at its discretion.
Students often neglect the Chemistry and Physics sections of NEET, which result in bringing their scores down. Remember that it is important to score in all the subjects, be it Physics, Chemistry, Zoology or Botany. The Physics part is a little difficult. So you can compensate for it by putting up a little more effort in Chemistry and score more than 160 marks in it.
If you prepare well and follow a good strategy, it will not be difficult for you to attempt at least 40-42 Chemistry questions in NEET with mostly all correct answers.
Formalize a Well-Distributed Timetable for All Subjects
Firstly, you should prepare a timetable based on your strengths and weaknesses, distributing equal time to all the three subjects. Such a timetable may help you stay focused and regular. While preparing for Chemistry, you should prepare notes and charts, listing important reactions and conversion processes in Organic Chemistry.
Prioritize the Most Important Sections of Chemistry
You must spend more time in preparing for the sections from which maximum questions are asked. At the same time, you should not spend much time on complex topics. Point out important chapters with more importance and prepare those well, and then move to the lesser important sections.
The most important topics of Chemistry include Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Electrochemistry and Coordination Compounds. Prepare these chapters thoroughly. Solve at least 10 numerical problems every day for the Physical Chemistry section.
Often students ignore Surface Chemistry, Metallurgy, Biomolecules and Polymers and Chemistry while 5 to 6 questions are asked from these chapters. From p-block section of Inorganic Chemistry, make sure to prepare the elements of Group 13 and 14 properly.
Try to memorize the periodic table as well as possible as it may fetch you a lot of marks in this section.
Begin with NCERT Books
Do not begin with the most complex topics of Chemistry right at the beginning. It’s important to clear the fundamentals first. It is suggested to begin with the NCERT Chemistry books for Chemistry preparation.
Also, it is important to understand the formulas before applying them. Note down all the important formulas and refer to these whenever needed.
Expert faculty members from the best coaching institutes suggest to cover the entire NCERT Chemistry book before referring to other study material. This would assure you score more than 160 marks out of 180 in the Chemistry section.
Regular Practice and Revision
Learn and memorize all the formulas thoroughly. Your preparation would not be as useful if you do not practice regularly.
Once the theoretical concepts are clear to you, practice as many questions as possible from each chapter to get better. Keep revising the chapters regularly to avoid forgetting them after some time.
Go through NEET question papers of at least 10 previous years and practice with sample papers.
Prepare Inorganic Chemistry only from the NCERT book. You may refer to other books for the remaining sections of Chemistry. It is good to follow multiple books for covering as much problems as you can, but you should also avoid the reference to a lot of books.
You may also go through the online Chemistry study material for NEET preparation such as online tutorials, mock tests and study tips available on the various educational blogs related to preparation of Chemistry.
Attempt Lots of Chemistry Questions
Attempt at least 50 questions after completion of each chapter of Chemistry. This will clear your concepts and strengthen your preparation.
Attempting questions on a regular basis will build your confidence in the subject. You also need to assess your answers and see improvement over the series of attempts.
Irrespective of whether or not you have a good hold of the subject, you must reserve a couple of hours each day for its practice. This will help you secure good marks in NEET 2018. All the best!
