Gonit Sora is organizing a webinar to be delivered by Prof. S. G. Dani of the UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CBS) on the occasion of National Mathematics Day 2020. The details are given below.

Title: Trigonometry in ancient India

Abstract: The subject of trigonometry has a long history in India. Even before the trigonometry via angles arrived on the scene, inspired by the Greek trigonometry, various properties of triangles with a trigonometric flavour had been known in the sulbasutra and Jaina traditions. In this talk we trace some of these early developments and the rise of trigonometric understanding in the Siddhanta tradition of mathematical astronomy, featuring the evolution of the basic concepts, the trigonometric tables and formulas, etc.

About the Speaker: Prof. Shrikrishna Gopalrao Dani is a distinguished professor in the UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CBS). Prior to this, he was a professor in the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. Prof. Dani did his masters from the University of Mumbai and a PhD from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in 1975, after which he joined TIFR as a faculty. He also spend time as a visitor in the Institute for Advanced Study. He has been Chairman of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) and of the Commission for Development and Exchange (CDE) of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). Among his many honours include the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1990, an invited talk at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in 1994 and the World Academy of Sciences prize in 2007. His research interests are in ergodic theory and the history of Indian mathematics and has published over a 100 research papers in reputed journals such as the Annals of Mathematics, Duke Mathematical Journal, Inventiones Mathematicae, etc.

The talk will be suitable for a general audience (college students are specially welcome), and will be held online via Zoom. It will also be livestreamed on our Facebook page.
