Title : Fermat’s Last Theorem and a failure of unique factorization.
Abstract : We will discuss the solution to a basic case of Fermat’s Last Theorem in this talk. The talk will be mostly introductory and will be focused on the apparent failure of “generalization of fundamental theorem of arithmetic” that was needed in the solution of Fermat’s Last Theorem. We will finish the discussion with a few immediate implications of this failure in Algebraic Number Theory, namely Ideal Class Groups and Ideal Class Number.
