Gonit Sora is organizing a special webinar as part of its 10th anniversary celebration on 21st April 2021 to be delivered by Prof. Ken Ono of the University of Virginia, USA. The details are given below.

Title: What is the Riemann Hypothesis, and why does it matter?

Abstract: The Riemann hypothesis provides insights into the distribution of prime numbers, stating that the nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function have a “real part” of one-half. A proof of the hypothesis would be world news and fetch a $1 million Millennium Prize. In this lecture, we will discuss the mathematical meaning of the Riemann hypothesis and why it matters. Along the way, we will tell tales of mysteries about prime numbers and highlight new advances. We will conclude with a discussion of recent joint work with mathematicians Michael Griffin of Brigham Young University, Larry Rolen of Vanderbilt, and Don Zagier of the Max Planck Institute, which sheds new light on this famous problem.

About the Speaker: Prof. Ken Ono is at present the Thomas Jefferson Professor of Mathematics at the University of Virginia, USA. He is one of the most prominent living number theorists and is widely known for his work in number theory, specially his work related to partitions of integers and modular forms. He received his BA from the University of Chicago and his MA and PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles. Before moving to the University of Virginia, he has held positions at various institutes including but not limited to the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, the Institute for Advanced Study, Penn State University and Emory University. He has been or is an editor of several important mathematical journals including the Annals of Combinatorics, International Journal of Number Theory, Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society and the Ramanujan Journal. Prof. Ono has also set on various award committees and has served on the boards of various organizations, including as Vice President of the American Mathematical Society.

The talk will be suitable for a general audience (college students are specially welcome), and will be held online via Zoom. It will also be livestreamed on our Facebook page.
