04 Nov Webinar: Classification problems in Mathematics by Prof. S. Ramanan (Chennai Mathematical Institute) in memory of Prof. C.S. Seshadri (1932-2020)
Gonit Sora is organizing a webinar to be delivered by Prof. S. Ramanan of Chennai Mathematical Institute. This talk will be dedicated to the memory of Prof. C.S. Seshadri who passed away recently on 17th July, 2020. The details of the talk are given below.
Date: 8 November, 2020 (Sunday)
Time: 2.30 pm IST
Title: Classification problems in Mathematics
Abstract: The classification of simple Lie groups was obtained at the turn of twentieth century and that of finite simple groups at the end of the century. The classification of surfaces 3-folds, etc. from the topological point of view was achieved in the middle of the century. Vector bundle classification and their study has occupied much of the second half. I will give examples to illustrate various types of classification.
About the Speaker: Professor S. Ramanan is an adjunct professor at Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI). Before joining CMI, he was a professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) for several years. He did his BA (hons) in Mathematics at Vivekananda College, Chennai. He then did his PhD in mathematics at TIFR in 1957, where his supervisor was Prof. M.S. Narasimhan. He did his postdoctoral studies at Oxford University, Harvard University and ETH Zurich. He was also a Visiting Professor at many universities in Switzerland, USA, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan and Mexico.
Prof. Ramanan works in the area of algebraic geometry, moduli spaces, and Lie Groups and is one of India’s leading mathematicians, especially in the area of moduli problems in algebraic geometry. He has also worked in differential geometry. He has published several important books and papers of which we mention one: Global Calculus, Graduate Studies in Mathematics, Volume 65, American Mathematical Society, 2005.
Several awards and recognitions have been awarded to Prof. Ramanan. He received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1979; the The World Academy of Sciences Prize for Mathematics in 2001 and the Srinivasa Ramanujan Medal of the Indian National Science Academy in 2008.
The talk will be suitable for a general audience (college students are specially welcome), and will be held online via Zoom. It will also be livestreamed on our Facebook page.
All our talks are recorded and the recording is made available on our YouTube channel later.
e-Certificates will be issued to participants who attend the talk on Zoom.
