Webinar: Mathematics of the Football by Prof. Fernando Rodriguez Villegas (ICTP Trieste, Italy)

Gonit Sora is organizing a webinar on 8th May 2021 to be delivered by Prof. Fernando Rodriguez Villegas of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste (Italy). The details are given below.

Date: 8 May 2021 (Saturday)

Time: 1.30 pm IST

Title: Mathematics of the Football

Abstract: How to build something spherical out of pieces all of roughly the same shape? This problem concerns the structure of balls for many games, special molecules, domes  and viruses. In this talk we will discuss some of the geometry that these structures share and how the constraints imposed by physical space lead to similar solutions.

About the SpeakerProf. Villegas is a Senior Research Scientist at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. He did his initial studies in mathematics in Argentina and then moved to the Ohio State University for his PhD which he completed in 1990. Prior to joining ICTP, he has held positions at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton University, University of Texas at Austin and several visiting positions in different countries. He is widely known for his work in number theory, geometry and combinatorics.

The talk will be suitable for a general audience (college students are specially welcome), and will be held online via Zoom. It will also be livestreamed on our Facebook page.

This talk will be recorded and the recording is made available on our YouTube channel later.

e-Certificates will be issued to participants who attend the talk on Zoom.
